about

An evening prayer by the Icelandic pastor and poet Hallgrímur Pétursson (1614-1674.) The Icelandic folk song collector Bjarni Þorsteinsson often heard this prayer sung to the above melody in his youth and both are notated on page 535 of his folk song collection Íslenzk þjóðlög (1906-1909.)

Accompaniment on an Italian triple harp by Simon Capp (2015)

lyrics

Nú vil eg enn í nafni þínu,
náðugi Guð sem léttir pínu,
mér að minni hvílu halla
og heiðra þig fyrir gæsku alla
þáða af þér á þessum degi,
því er skylt eg gleymi eigi.
En það má eg aumur játa,
angri vafinn, sýta og gráta:
Móðgað hef ég margfaldlega
miskunn þína guðdómlega.
Útslétt mínar syndir svartar,
sundurkramið lækna hjarta.
